Sand and Steel

Iron Sculpture Exhibit

Marshall J. Gardner Center For The Arts

The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District will be exhibiting sculptures created by Wirt-Emerson students in a week long workshop facilitated by Calumet Artist Residency, where students will create sand molds using local sand that will then be positively cast by pouring molten iron into the molds. Iron will be salvaged from scrap yards to introduce an element of recycling. This process resembles the process used in local steel mills and the workshop combines disciplines and incorporates lessons in math, science, and art.

The Artist/Teacher is Aaron Leif Nicholson who earned his MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2007 and has exhibited in the United States, Canada, China, and the United Kingdom.
