Mindlarking

Works in Collage and Assemblage

Marshall J. Gardner Center For The Arts

March 21 – April 25

Opening Reception: Friday, March 21, 6pm – 8pm Artist Talk: Saturday, April 19, 2pm

With a diverse range of materials such as fabric scraps, vintage magazines, grocery store sale signage, and found objects as their inspiration, ten artists have come together to present a captivating array of works in collage and assemblage.

The exhibit’s name comes from the term ‘mudlarking,’ the activity of searching a river’s edge for lost objects and treasure.  In the artist’s hands, the treasure trove is reimagined into a fascinating exploration of the object’s relationship with other seemingly unrelated materials.

From studies of abstraction and form in Paloma Trecka’s bold, colorful constructions to the sly social commentary of Steve Walter’s collaged store signage and lively creatures in Beth Davis’ found object totems, each artist creates a unique vocabulary to express their artistic fascination.

Quimby bookstore owner Eric Kirsammer’s constructions of small toys and other mass-manufactured bits become mini-monuments to the discarded while Chicago artist Deborah Kraft excises dozens of minute forms, placing them as meticulously as antiquities in a museum.

In animator Lisa Barcy’s tabletop sculptures, carnivalesque abstract figures made from record album covers loop and dance, and Nellie Seigel’s pieced quilt explores home and nostalgia.  Sculptor Mathias Schergan’s playful figurative work, made of a multitude of objects, and Matt Marsden’s diminutive moody collages draw the viewer into closer examination.  Brooklyn artist Ashley Teamer reflects on their hometown of New Orleans by combining large-scale photos of joyful celebrations and common neighborhood features.

We invite guests to immerse themselves in artmaking at the opening: visitors can create a visual collage, a collage poem, or an ‘exquisite corpse’ drawing. This interactive element promises an engaging and memorable experience for all attendees.
