Foundational Upholstery Skills – Basics

This class teaches students the fundamental techniques and skills necessary to reupholster a simple dining chair. Students will learn to deconstruct and re-cover a slip seat and see demos on webbing, piping, and other techniques they can use at home! $50

Suitable for beginners with little to no upholstery experience, as well as those looking to refresh their skills.

Practice chairs, tools, and fabric will be provided.

Students will:

  • Gain hands-on experience with upholstery tools and materials
  • Learn to measure a project for materials and fabric
  • Understand the foundation of an upholstered seat
  • Sew a fabric-covered welt cord if needed.

Instructor Jamika Smith is the founder of Teena’s Legacy, a not-for-profit charitable organization whose mission is to create a safe space for young women and women in general to explore their authentic selves using upholstery as a conduit for self-reflection, self-expression, and economic transformation. She is also the CEO of Affirm My Design LLC, which provides a holistic approach to the upholstery and home décor industry. Not only does she assist in your upholstery needs, but she’s also able to use upholstery as a tool to help individuals recreate themselves anew.
