Lake Effekt 2017 is way more than just another brick in the wall
GARY, IND. – This summer, graffiti artists in Miller Beach will be painting the town red (and yellow and blue and green and just about every other color imaginable).
The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District’s bi-annual event, Lake Effekt 2017 Summer Expo, will occur on Saturday, June 17 from noon to 8 p.m.
On Lake Street, more than 60 graffiti artists from Northwest Indiana and Chicago will be transforming walls volunteered by local businesses into public art. Live bands, food, art & craft vendors, and a beer tent provided by Flamingo Pizza will be highlighted. Curated by Ismael Nieves of NWI’s famed CISA crew, this year’s artists will also include local muralists from Gary.
Children will participate by painting trash cans, which will then be placed throughout the community.
“This is our third Lake Effekt. The last one was quite successful, with more than 800 attendees from all over the area,” Meg Roman, MBACD Executive Director, said. “All of the businesses who have murals painted on their walls are eager to do it again. The artists love the vibe of the street festival and are vying for the best spot to create their murals.”
Roman said that businesses and individuals really embrace the festival. “It’s a wonderful collaboration of volunteers from the community joining along with the business owners to turn Lake Street into a party where life, culture, art, and community can be celebrated.”
“There’s a lot of interaction between the artists and the community when the event is going on,” she added. “It elicits tons of conversation after the fact throughout the year, drawing visitors to the area who stop and take pictures every day.”
The live music menu for the occasion will feature the classic rock of Michael Young and Buddy Goettsch, as well as Jeff Sarver; eclectic accordion music by Eve and Jordy; and folk and blues provided by Barb Silverman Trio from the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.
Lake Effekt 2017 is made possible by grant funding from the Indiana Office of Tourism and the Office of Community and Rural Affairs. Additional sponsors include Miller Pizza Company, Lee Construction Services, Ayers Realty, and Ann Rose.
Lake Effekt 2017 will be spraying across Lake Street (which will be blocked off from traffic from Miller Avenue to 5th Place) and is free and open to the public. The Street Fest, featuring live music, art activities, graffiti artists, a beer garden, and vendors, will take place on Saturday, June 17 from noon to 8 p.m. Donations to the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District are appreciated.
